GOR Revisited

The iconic Great Ocean Rd was the start of our Lap in 2018.  The weather was not as consistent this time around, but we still had some great days.  Same as last time we took the Sorento ferry to Queenscliff.

Queenscliff Beach

There are some lovely old buildings here…

Last time we missed Geelong, so rather than rush south to Torquay we took the little travelled coast road north to explore some of the small bays. St Leonards was worth a stop

Arriving in Geelong we restricted our time to the beachfront.  Anyone travelling in a motorhome or caravan will know the issues around finding parking next to a city beach.  Geelong kindly supply a designated 4 hour RV park close by, GPS -38.142598°, 144.359583°.

There are numerous painted bollards depicting historical characters.  Here is a small selection…

After a night in the Geelong Showgrounds campground we took the short trip to Torquay. A storm is coming so we decided to park up a couple of days before hitting the GOR.

Torquay is the surf capital of the coast
Maybe they get some wind here!
Bells Beach Brewery, only steps from our campsite

With the weather improving we start the GOR proper.

Teddy’s Lookout, Lorne
Plenty of blackberries all along this coastline
Awesome views on every corner
Sheoak Falls
Swallow Cave

It was a hot day so Kennett River campground was our stop for the night.  Just across the road is a safe surf beach, the water pristine and refreshing.

The fine weather was short lived, and the next day the grey skies returned.  Forest walks are always good, and Maits Rest is a great little rainforest walk.

We parked up for 2 nights at a VIC National Park, Johanna Beach,  again waiting for the sunshine to come back.

Very tempestuous seas along this coast, no wonder there were so any ship wrecks.

Now we can visit the famous 12 Apostles in all their glory.

Loch Ard Gorge has plenty of walking tracks to coastal lookouts and well worth a few hours.

Feeling a little tired we arrived at Port Campbell. Such welcome relief to find a tranquill beach to relax for a moment.  When we discovered they had a cheap camping area we decided to stay the next day and just enjoy a day by the beach. Fish & Chip and a Brewery helped too!

Refresh time at Sow & Piglets Brewery

We had forgot there were several more features to see along the coast, so after frittering away a day of sunshine we missed seeing these at their best

London Bridge
The Grotto
Bay of Martyrs
Bay of Islands

We stopped at Warrnambool to restock the pantry, had a quick swim to cool off from the heat, then decided the best place to be was driving with the AC on and headed north towards the Grampians.

Lake side parkup, with southern ranges of Grampians in the distance

We parked by a lake and prepared to stay the night, but that afternoon Victoria announced a mini 5 day COVID lockdown so we decided to take the 4 hour drive to Melbourne to sit it out –  hence plenty of time to catch up on posts! Thankfully the lockdown was not extended, so back on the the road soon 😀
